The IMSMP has a strong commitment to
academics and medical education. Every week, there are numerous conferences and
other educational activities to sharpen our skills as clinical providers and
ensure the staff is up to date on the latest advances in multiple sclerosis. The
IMSMP is affiliated with St. Luke's-Roosevelt Medical Center, a nearby academic
institution where Dr. Sadiq recently served as the Chairman of the Department
of Neurology. Dr. Sadiq also has an appointment at the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine, where Dr.'s Sylvester and Stark completed their neurology
training, and is a former faculty member of Columbia University College of
Physicians and Surgeons, where Dr. Williams trained. The IMSMP welcomes
interested health professionals who are still in training, so that they may
learn more about multiple sclerosis, and there are often individuals,
particularly from these institutions, who spend time at the center.
The MSRCNY holds several conferences
throughout the week, which the clinical staff of the IMSMP are invited to
attend. The MSRCNY has a weekly meeting which provides updates on a particular
project's progress as well as to discuss alternative approaches and novel ideas
for future directions. A weekly Journal Club also takes place, in which
recently published articles are critically reviewed and discussed, with
particular attention to their relevance to clinical practice.
The IMSMP conducts clinical
conferences as well. World renowned leaders in the field of multiple sclerosis
and neuro-immunology speak weekly to the entire staff at our Grand Rounds
lecture. The staff also meets every morning to review the day's schedule,
discuss each patient and assign clinical duties to each staff member. This
ensures that the day runs efficiently and punctually with minimal interruption.
Additionally, the attending physicians, clinical fellow and nurse practitioner
meet weekly to discuss all patients new to the center. This conference is
important for generating new ideas for patient evaluation and management as
well as to familiarize each provider with every patient who is under the
center's care. A bimonthly, neuro-immunology case conference is attended by the clinical staff in which particularly challenging diagnostic dilemmas are presented and discussed. Finally, throughout the month, there are a variety of
educational activities arranged for particular staff members. These have
recently included: transfer training, injection training on each of the
injectible medications, clinical journal club and clincal research update conference.
